PREVIOUS WINNERS 1987 - 1992
1987 Kim Mather / Yvonne Mather - VW Sirocco 3.6 4wd
After finishing runners up in '86 husband and wife team Kim and Yvonne Mather returned to New Brighton's Promenade and swept to victory. Swept to victory being a good description as this year's event also happened to coincide with a spring high tide causing massive waves to come crashing over the sea wall.

1989 John Price / Gill Oates - Renault 21 Turbo

John Price returned to New Brighton in a new car with Gill Oates in the Co-Driver's seat. Despite having a great deal of trouble in stopping the powerful Renault with its Group N spec brakes Price held on to win the rally and give the car it's only victory in the UK. Mike Oates took the runners up spot on his first attempt at the event as a driver.

1991 Martin Elsdon / Dave Robson - Darrian T90
1991 Winners Martin Elsdon and Dave Robson came to New Brighton for the first time in their ex Geoff Kitney Motoring News Championship
winning Darrian T90 and romped home to victory. This was despite an early morning scare when the rear body section came adrift, breaking the car's rear aerofoil as they drove a whole stage with the body work trailing behind.

1988 John Price / Mike Oates - MG Metro 6R4
John Price returned this year in a Metro 6R4 co-driven by Mike Oates. At the time the Metro was only just out of World Championship
Rallying and gave many spectators their first view of one of these cars at New Brighton. The win convinced Mike Oates this was the sport for him and he returned in 1989 as a driver in the same Metro
.

1983 Ken Langley / Jean Langley - Ford Escort Mk2

Probably the most flamboyant display of car control New Brighton's closed roads took the father and son combination of Andrew and Duncan Wight to victory in 1990. Wight's ex Pentti Airikilla Chevette HSR was hounded all day by John Hardman's Ford Escort, but Andy's sideways skills ensured they held onto victory by the close of the day.

1992 John Price / Anne-Marie Smith - MG Metro 6R4
John Price returned to New Brighton in 1992, but with a second/mile penalty under champions rules he had a real fight on all day with '91 winners Martin Elsdon and Dave Robson in their Darrian. The close battle ended on the 10th stage when Elsdon's Darrian broke a drive shaft within sight of the stage finish and it was all over and Price took his 4th Promenade win.
